Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School first-graders had an opportunity to create their own drinks, thanks to a visit from a parent volunteer.
Kathlene McManus, a mixologist for PepsiCo, shared the methods she uses in creating soft drinks at her job.
“To protect our eyes and clothing, we had to wear lab jackets and safety goggles just like [McManus] does when she works,” said first-grade teacher Patricia Lynch. “We had to smell the different flavors and learn how to make a drink clear or cloudy. Based on what we liked, we were able to add flavors and mix until we got them just right.”
The activity allowed students to see a real world example of how using a STEM method like trial and error can be useful.
