After children’s author Trudy Ludwig learned her own daughter was being bullied, she published her first book, “My Secret Bully,” which addresses how social interactions can turn bad, even at the elementary level.
Ludwig visited Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School first-, second-, third- and fourth-graders on March 19, discussing bullying openly with students. She introduced the idea of a bystander vs. an upstander, tattling vs. reporting and even invited students to say mean things to her as she introduced tools for fighting bullying.
Ludwig demonstrated ideas such as telling bullies to stop, changing the subject, walking away and even using humor in a harmless way to respond to mean comments.
“You can break the cycle of being mean,” she said.
