In honor of Veterans Day, several fourth-grade classes at Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School wrote letters to local veterans to thank them for their service.“We began with a discussion of what a veteran is and why it is important to honor them on Veterans Day,” said fourth-grade teacher Theresa Arturi. “We then watched a video on the different branches of the armed forces and took notes. The class talked with friends about what they learned in the video and shared ideas of what to include in the letter.”
Students also referenced the Operation Gratitude website and brainstormed as a class about topics to include, such as words of thanks and information about their own likes and hobbies.
“The class took their notes home and wrote the letters there,” said Arturi. “I will send them to Operation Gratitude to be dispersed.”
In other classrooms around the school, students filled out cards to attach to gift bags for the annual veterans luncheon at the Croton Yacht Club.
