Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School students learned the importance of community service when they helped two girl scouts from Yorktown on March 22 make a fleece blanket, which will be donated to children at the Blythedale Children’s Hospital.“I hope the students will learn that doing something for other people and reaching out to children who need help is very important,” said teacher Lisa Frey, whose K-2 collaborative program students worked on the blanket. “It’s such a busy time that it’s nice to give back. It’s also a nice way to bring two different communities together for a good cause.”
Frey invited Alyssa Giannasca, an eighth-grader at Mildred E. Strang Middle School, and fellow troop 1483 member Lindsay Boyle, also an eighth-grader, to work with the students. Giannasca, who completed a requirement for her Silver Girl Scout Award by visiting the school, is collecting and making blankets for children in need through her “A Little Warmth Brings a Lot of Happiness” project.“It’s important for people to help others who are in their community, so by making the blankets with the students, I’m raising awareness about how important it is to help others,” she said.
The students, their teachers and the two girl scouts gathered around in a circle and worked on the blanket, which was decorated with cartoon monkeys. They tied knots around the blanket’s fringes, which Giannasca had cut prior to meeting with the children.“It makes me feel good because it’s fun to help other kids in need,” second-grader Alex Jones said. “I liked making the blanket and helping boys and girls in the hospital,” second-grader Kevin Suarez added.
